Yet another reminder of our fallen Nippy's unfortunate departure comes in form of the first single Celebrate released from forthcoming soundtrack for film Sparkle. Along with Sparks, the video features Whitney's fellow cast members: Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, and more.
Although it is bittersweet that Whitney herself is not in the video, it does provide more footage of her in the film which works. The song may not spell radio smash but it's nice to see Whitney leaving us off on an uplifting note. Take a look at the video below.

In between applications of lipstick from his Madea drag persona, Tyler Perry found time to take a dive in the action film genre. The question of the day here is can the man who made an old granny a cult phenom pull off being a action film star? Hmmmm... For me the jury is still out. But by taking a look at the trailer for Alex Cross, he definitely seemed to pay no nevermind to the nay-sayers. Take a look at the trailer and tell me what you think.
Yes I have finally mustered up enough strength, energy, and complete lack of couth to resurface my video blog series. Take a gander as I briefly touch on topics such as Willow Smith piercings, VH1's Hollywood Exes, Tweet's upcoming album and more in the only way I know how: without sense. Please show me some love and let me know my efforts were not in vain!
Do you remember the round face lead singer of 90's R&B group Xscape? Well if you do, homegirl LaTocha Scott looks like she finally scrapped the last nickles of Traces of My Lipstick royalty checks to get in the studio to produce new single, Complicatedfeaturing Wale.
The track is real cute for a girl. Although I'm not sure where it will go for a one who has been out the limelight for such a long time and seemingly no major record distribution but I will support a queen if she comes on my block selling her forthcoming mixtape out of a featured trunk.
Look out for her new mixtape Truth N The Boothto be released God knows when at the moment.
"How dare you talk about anybody's head when all your wigs look like all my life I had to fight!"
Comedic visionary "Patti LaHelle" returns with web series Got 2B Realwith "Long Time, No Seat (Crispy Business Pt 2)" Oh the shade of it all! Fantasia returns from her expulsion and the divas gather to wreck shop one more time. Featuring parodies of music's favorites Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, and Christina Aguilera among others are definitely something to feast your eyes on!
One could say it was the best of times, then came the worst of times when it came to neo-soul leading man, D'Angelo. Coming off a successful debut with Brown Sugar and even more noteworthy Vodoo(including infamous nude video for Untitiled (How Does It Feel)), the man seemed to be on a roll in making his print in the musical landscape. But here came the drug problems and legal woes including an alleged soliciting of a cop for sexual favors that led to years of absence only with a few guests spots on other artists albums and soundtracks. Threats for a third album had been made for almost a decade. Pictures in tabloids found the singer out of shape and seemingly destitute. The notoriousJames Riveralbum that was supposed to be his third release failed to see the light of day. Perhaps that is all about to change behind announcement by BET that the crooner plans to finally grace the stage. I'm not sure about you, but my anticipation for this year's awards show sure mounting. Will you be watching?
I'm not sure if many of you all noticed the newest Facebook phenomenon known as DiSSney Princess Feuds. If you have, I'm sure you got a couple of free reading skills to add to your credit. I know I have. Always a good cackle to see the pop-tart cookie cutter creations like Cinderella, Belle, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty unpin their locks and bring their claws out all through realistically petty Facebook exchanges.
Make sure you all keep up to date in all the shade on their Facebook Page here: Dissney Princess Feuds
It's hard trying to follow up behind a comeback record that wasEmancipation of Mimi. E=MC2and Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel proved that when they couldn't quite measure up to the aforementioned. No worries for all the little "Lambs" out there cuz Mariah Carey isn't finished yet. With pictures popping up on the blogs of her in the studio and Twitter teases of material coming soon, the Carey camp is planning a chart assault that will make you regret you doubted her shape-shifting shape to begin with.
But let's be honest. The nursery rhymes found in tracks lifted from her last two albums did prompt a slow eye roll. However, I will say that the production element was still strong. Considering that Mariah is nestling in her 40s and entering what other divas would consider legendary phase, it is really time for Mrs. Nick Cannon to put down the school yard antics.
Being a mother, wife, and now elder statesmen in divadom; I believe it is time for Mariah to return to her classic, wind blowing through hair, glass shattering vocals that shot her to stardom. Yes, I do understand that the musical climate has changed and one must keep on top of those changes in order to survive. However, we can see by the evidence that was Memoirs that such tactics aren't for everybody. As new as Adele is to the game, the bitch stuck to what she knew: sitting on the nearest bar stool while belting a strong traditional pop vocal that resonated with the masses. A year plus since her last release and you still can't knock the broad of the charts.
I said all that to say this. HANG UP THE WHISPERING MARIAH! Since we have lost Nippy, it is up to you to carry the throne of modernized pop divas. It's time to give us diddies like Love Takes Time, Fantasy, and Vision of Love. Now if that means that you're going to have to marinate your vocal chords in Halls menthols, SO BE IT! Leave the asinine lyrical content the little girls. You're 42, it's time to tuck in your shoulder meat and clit print and grow up and leave Dream alone!
Thank You!
Love, The Catching-Life Family
If you find yourself wondering what is legendary blues/gospel singer and mother of the late Whitney Houston, Cissy, is doing you can find her at the nearest Newark baptist church. Probably somewhere between a garbage dump and funeral parlor, Mother Houston is meticulously going over some scales and coughing out some rasp in preparation for a tribute for the ages in honor of dear Nippy at the upcoming BET Awards.
Behind a book deal and reality show in the works, the legendary house of Houston didn't drag their feet to make the most of a trying time. Now Cissy plans to slide into the spotlight with her best rhinestone cape while hitting her best C-sharp alongside, let BET tell it, "a few top divas".
Wondering who these supposed divas are? Well BET is pretty tight lipped about their identities since the tribute has not officially been announced. But considering the networks history, we'll be lucky if it is Chante Moore and Monifah, oh and Nicki Minaj for the young folk.
Anyway, like many of you, I'll be tuned in on July 1st to see how this tribute comes together. So far, the tributes to The Voice left me a little high and dry. C'mon BET, try to do something right!
Just when you thought you had enough cast of broads pummeling on each other every waking moment, here walks in the Hollywood Exes. Self proclaimed King of the South, T.I. returns with new single Love This Life. This will be the first track lifted for forthcoming album Trouble Man due September 4th.
When Kim Kardashian sat in the Oprah hotseat during the Oprah's Next Chapter interview, I'm sure she knew that she was going to have to come clean about her trivial past. But to actually see the socialite having to own up to her salacious beginnings was quite the sight to see.
In response, she states:
“I’m not naive to that fact. That’s pretty much how I was introduced to the world. It was a negative
way, so I felt like I really had to work ten times harder to get people
to see the real me.”
Among covering her other experiences like her controversial short lived marriage to basketball player Kris Humpries, Winfrey also chatted with other members of the Kardashian clan. Take a look at the revealing interview below.
Known for the famous catchphrase, “Can’t we all just get
along?” Rodney King was found dead in his swimming pool Sunday morning by his fiancée
and authorities. He was 47.
Rialto, California police responded to a 911 call from King’s
fiancée, Cynthia Kelly at around 5:25 a.m. When police responded, officers
discovered King at the bottom of the pool. Revival efforts failed as he was
retrieved and he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
King shot to notoriety when he led a high speed chase and
ended in a brutal beating by the LAPD. From there sparked the infamous LA riots
and the acquittal of the four officers involved. This marked a significant time
that shaped racial relations in America.
Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington adds another film to his long list of accolades in the motion picture drama, Flight. Washington plays airline pilot Whip Whitaker that finds himself in a heap of trouble behind an act of heroism. Here's the tagline:
An airline pilot saves a flight from crashing, but an investigation into the malfunctions reveals something troubling.
Also starring Don Cheadle and John Goodman, the film looks like it will unravel an interesting story. Take a look at the trailer below.
My favorite guilty pleasure, Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, is back and garnering chuckles galore for its season two opener. Created, written, directed, and starring Issa Rae, the web series follows the life of J, a passive-aggressive call center worker at a diet pill company. Her awkward and often comical interactiona with co-workers and love interests have garnered great interest. Since its premiere in February of last year, the grassroots production raised $56,169 in donations and have been interviewed by CNN and Associated Press among others.
The comedy world bids farewell to 'Moesha' and 'The Parkers' comedienne/actress Yvette Wilson. She suffered from cervical cancer. The 48 year old, best known as Andell on both shows, died Thursday from stage 4 of the disease and kidney problems.
The actress had accumulated mounting medical bills from her illness which prompted a fundraiser in her name seeking $25,000.
On the website of the fundraiser close friend to Wilson, Jeffrey Pittle, confirmed the news:
"It is
with a heavy heart that I can verify that Yvette passed away last
evening after a lengthy and hard battle. She was a fighter
to the end, and her talent, humor and amazing friendship will be sorely
missed. She will live on through her awesome body of work."
In addition to her most notable roles on the UPN sitcoms, she also had
roles in House Party 2, House Party 3, and Def Comedy Jam.
When bottles started popping and thrown across NYC club W.i.P. towards the hot buttered biscuit colored Chris Brown, recount of the night became muddled.
Behind posting the picture of an apparent laceration behind the tussle, Breezy tweeted the following:
How u party wit a rich nigga that hate? Lol…. Throwing bottles like girls? #shameonya!
Ok! Niggas stand behind security!!!! Ok! U don’t pay them enough!
Niggas throwing bottles! Y’all niggaz weak!
One could speculate that this was retaliation from Drake behind Brown's altercation with singer (and Drake's rumored jump-off) Rihanna back in 2009 and his explosive remix to Kanye West's 'Thereaflu' that disrespected the goat whisperer.
Drake has now responded via PR rep with the following:
Drake did not participate in any
wrongdoing of any kind last night at W.i.P. He was on his way out of
the club when the altercation began.”
[Drake] did not engage in any activity which resulted in injury to person or damage to property. Source.
Once considered friendly, the pair has reportedly been at odds with each other for months. An eye-witness of the public pounding had this to say:
Shame on grown men acting like bruised runway queens!
Chris Brown's bodyguard in hospital from injuries sustained from incident
In response to the speculation, Ninja Sonik tweeted the picture below with the caption “Yo @chrisbrown & @Drake Thanks alot we will send u tha bill"
Tweet Tuesdays, the promotional push for Tweet's long awaited album Simply Tweet, arrived. This Tuesday finds the Call Me singer in Trouble. Check out the track that finds Tweet in her comfortable signature sound.
Transitioning from a R&B heart-throb to a dance pop-star might seem like no easy feat. But for the likes of Usher, it has become a money-making norm. Considering how the post-Gaga musical landscape has morphed in such a way where the top bucks comes in forms of synthesized beats and electronica melodies, Usher (like many) has adapted this into his offerings minimizing his more soulful roots.
With that said, Usher brings fourth his seventh studio album Looking 4 Myself. Leading with single Climax followed by Scream, the singer finds himself immersed in the usual post-breakup/love songs with occasionally offering more unique themes found in songs like Sins of My Father.
As his 20 year career matured, so has his sound as Usher moves through genres to reflect a more universal appeal. One could say that the singer has taken a more daring stance when approaching his music; flowing through elements of old Motown sound to Dupstep all while exercising his falsetto muscle.
Having worked with producers like Diplo, Rico Love, Pharell Williams, and Salaam Remi, Usher claims that Looking 4 Myself is "....all about striving for greatness and offering the best I have."
Take a listen to some snippets lifted from the album below. Will you be buying?
Usually I wouldn't really care about tales of LeToya Luckett and her webisode that's covering God knows what. Don't get me wrong, I like LeToya and I think she is a pretty lady, but I hadn't really checked for her since Torn dropped. But I did find one of her episodes especially poignant.
Although I have found somewhat surprising pics of LeToya and her DC replacement Michelle Williams on the blogs, I didn't really think much of it. But looking at this particular episode, I found a pretty special moment between the two. Considering the ins and outs of the whole Destiny's Child breakup/replacement debacle, I thought it was a rare instance to see two grown women acting as such. In an environment where shows like Basketball Wives and Real Housewives of Atlanta are glamorized for their salacious, caddy, and downright violent and childlike antics, it was good to see these ladies take a high road and even develop a friendship a messy situation.
Take a look at the love shown and example set by the pair starting at 8:44.
DapperLou.com quickly became my fashion bible after finding it in a Google search. Always desiring to present myself well, I was looking for a source where signature style and flair is prominent. My search stopped once I found Brooklyn native Lougè Delcy's fashion blog. From street style featurettes to high end runway looks, USA and abroad, Delcy constantly stays on top of fashion trends worldwide. His work has even caught the eye of Vogue. It,
GQ.com, NYMag.com, Metro International, The Huffington Post,
Essence.Com, StyleLikeU.Com, Complex Magazine and Fox 5 News just for starters.
Take a look at some of his fashion forward looks below.
For those of you who have been sleeping on singer-songwriter Frank Ocean, shame on you! The 24-year-old responsible for songs like Beyonce's I Miss You and work on Jay-Z and Kanye's No Church In The Wild and Made In America is now breaking out and prepping on his debut album, Channel Orange. Coming off the buzz of his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra, Ocean is sure to make a huge splash.
Take a listen to what is considered the lead single, Pyramids, below.
I didn't get a chance to see Oprah's Next Chapter last night featuring rapper 50 Cent, but from what I heard it was an interesting sight.
Wasting no time, Oprah leaped right into the alleged quarrel between the two along with the controversial nature of his music.
From the perception of Oprah's hip hop bias to the rapper naming his dog Oprah Winfree, nothing is held back.
Take a look at the revealing exchange below.
Today would have been a good day to practice 6 o'clock kicks for pop crooner, Chris Brown. Coming out of the gate dazzling the masses for the Today Show was clearly a breeze for the singer as he went through a string of hits like "Yeah 3X," "Forever"' and "Turn Up The Music."His new album Fortune is due July 3rd.
I'm sure everyone has either already heard about or actually seen the controversial Flaming Lips video The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face featuring Erykah Badu and her sister Nayrok. To say the least, it's an eye bulge. If one member of the band is not twirling a piece of silver Lamé fabric, Erykah's sister is perched bare boobed and 'gina with ketchup and pancake batter drizzled all over her. Not to mention occasional glitter self slapped onto her bare bottom. I'm not sure about you, but this kinda "shock art" does nothing for me. What was the purpose?! Obviously Miss Badu didn't live either. Check out the Twitter exchange between her and Flaming Lips lead singer Wayne Coyne.
Wayne Coyne: “To
all the haters who think Erykah Badu has lost her mind!!! She has NOT!!!
The Flaming Lips take full responsibility .. For the making of and the
content of the controversial video !!! We are very sorry if it has
offended some of Erykah Badu’s more Conservative audience! The video was
intended for mature audiences and is NOT an Erykah Badu statement.. It
is a Flaming Lips video!!!”
Erykah Badu:“3:33pm dallas @waynecoyne then… perhaps, next time u get an occasion to
work with an artist who respects your mind/art, you should send at
least a ROUGh version of the video u PLAN to release b4 u manipulate or
compromise the artist’s brand by desperately releasing a poor excuse for
shock and nudity that sends a convoluted message that passes as art( to
some).
Even with Window Seat there was a method and thought process involved. I
have not one need for publicity . I just love artistic dialogue . And
just because an image is shocking does not make it art.
You obviously have a misconception of who I am artistically. I don’t mind that but…
By the way you are an ass.
Yu did everything wrong from the on set .
First:
You showed me a concept of beautiful tasteful imagery( by way of vid text messages) .
I trusted that. I was mistaken.
Then u release an unedited, unapproved version within the next few days.
That all spells 1 thing ,
Self Serving .
When asked what the concept
meant after u explained it , u replied ,”it doesn’t mean anything , I
just want to make a great video that everyone is going to watch. ”
I understood , because as an artist we all desire that. But we don’t all do it at another artist’s expense .
I attempted to resolve this respectfully by having conversations with u
after the release but that too proved to be a poor excuse for art.
From jump,
You begged me to sit in a tub of that other shit and I said naw. I
refused to sit in any liquid that was not water. But Out of RESPECT for
you and the artist you ‘appear’ to be, I Didn’t wanna kill your concept ,
wanted u to at least get it out of your head . After all, u spent your
dough on studio , trip to Dallas etc.. Sooo, I invited Nayrok , my lil
sis and artist, who is much more liberal ,to be subject of those other
disturbing (to me ) scenes . I told u from jump that I believed your
concept to be disturbing. But would give your edit a chance.
You then said u would take my shots ( in clear water/ fully covered
parts -seemed harmless enough) and Nayrok’s part ( which I was not
present for but saw the photos and a sample scene of cornstarch dripping
) and edit them together along with cosmic, green screen images ( which
no one saw) then would show me the edit. .
Instead, U disrespected me by releasing pics and rough vid on the internet without my approval. (Contract breech )
That is equivalent to putting out a security camera’s images of me changing in the fitting room.
I never would have approved that tasteless, meaningless, shock motivated video .
Our art is a reflection of who we are . I have no connection to those
images shot in their raw version. I was interested in seeing an amazing
edit that would perhaps change or alter my thoughts . Never happened .
You also did the same thing with the song itself which displays crappy
“rough “vocals by me . I let it go , perhaps iiiii was missing
something, I thought.
I Should have followed my first mind back in studio when recording the vocals “your way”.
( Red flag.) It was uncomfortable.
For that I am at fault .
Consequently, brother, As a human I am disgusted with your what appears
to be desperation and poor execution. And disregard for others . As a
director I am unimpressed . As a sociologist I understand your type. As
your fellow artist I am uninspired. As a woman I feel violated and
underestimated.
Hope it works out for ya ,Wayne.
Really i could give a shit less.
Still love your live show tho.
And , you’re welcomed.
Lesson learned .
By the way I have guested in very few videos. But I have always been
given the opportunity to see the edit and contribute to it when my roll
is substantial. Not this time .
I guess u feel it better to apologize than ask for permission and be
refused . Hey, Love u man, but your ways are not very nice .
O, And on behalf of all the artists u have manipulated or plan to manipulate, find another way .
These things have been said out of necessity.
And if you don’t like it
you can KiSS MY Glittery ASS .
O and Nayrok told me to tell u to kiss her ass too .”
Almost forgot. –Peace, Ms. Badu (Analog Girl’s Magnetic Strip Club)
Wayne Coyne: (insert picture of glittered lips) "Hey @fatbellybella I kissed it!!! Thanks!!!!! [SOURCE]
A bitch might have taken a seven year smoke break, but a doll is back for the jump off! Yessss! R&B siren, Tweet is back and returns with a stirring remake of the Aretha Franklin hit 'Daydreaming'.
Although the 'Oops (Oh My)' singer has made threats for comeback album for a while now, looks like she is making good on that promise. Now signed to MC Lyte's DuBose Music group, her new album Simply Tweet is supposed to be coming later this year.
Not to be considered the official first single, 'Daydreaming' is a promotional single as apart of her #TweetTuesdays. The singer will be releasing a new one every Tuesday leading up to the new album via her website iamsimplytweet.com .
At 64, Grace Jones is not playing with the girls. Not only is she knows for her androgynous antics in movies like 'Boomerang', she also serves as mother of the Legendary House of Gumby.
Jones not-so-quietly sits on the throne and rules over copy-cats Madonna, Gaga, Katy Perry, and the like.
Seeing her here at the Queen's Jubilee concert whispers quietly in my my ear, "Don't F**K with Grace!"
How many cunts do you see hoola-hooping for their lives in live performance?! 10s across the board, bitch. I tip my wig-crypt to you.
Check out all the regalia below and see her turn her hit 'Slave To The Rhythm'.
It can be arguably said that R&B starlet, Ciara hit her peak albums ago. Failing to meet the meteoric rise of her first two albums 'Goodies' (2.7 million sold) and 'Ciara: The Evolution' (1.3 million sold), her past two albums 'Fantasy Ride' and 'Basic Instinct' saw the Aaliyah-inspired beauty in decline and released from her record contract with Jive Records.
Now, the new Epic Records signee is set to make a comeback with her upcoming release 'One Woman Army'. Reunited with L.A. Reid, the producer behind her successful debut, Ciara positions herself with a lot to prove. In an interview with Sway in The Morning, she states:
"It really is just me pouring my heart into the record, and I think my
fans deserve that. I really had to be in a comfortable place, and I
really am and I'm excited about it, that's the beauty of music. Music is
like really being able to express yourself. I wanted to make sure that I
expressed myself in the best way that I could, and I let the music also
be a healing process for me at points. There's a lot of happy moments
as well, so that's what it's about. That's music. You laugh, you cry,
you dance, you love, you hurt, you feel all kinds of things. That's the
beauty of music."
Can Ciara recover the fame gained in the beginning of her career? Here's my prediction. Although I believe that Ciara is very talented, the market has become so over-saturated with R&B vixens. With the likes of Beyoncé and Rihanna running the game, its hard to say where Ciara will be placed in the shake-your-ass dynamic. Even veterans like Monica are struggling to retain their footing. Judging from what is being deemed her first single 'Sweat', it seems like business as usual for the doll. Ciara is going to have to come harder than these synthesized hip-hop dance tracks. It's broke, fix it! Judge for yourselves....
